Founder of Telepo, and pioneer in cloud based communications, on the partnership between Telness Tech and iotcomms.io
In 2018 Jörgen Björkner co-founded iotcomms.io. The Swedish-based company offers a cloud-native communications platform providing alarm, voice, and video functionalities for integration in critical real-time applications and services.
How have things changed within the telecoms space over the years?
In the past decade there have been many changes in the communications space. In fact, my previous company - Telepo - were pioneers in the telecoms space and in a way, set the foundations for what Telness Tech are doing right now.
Back in the day it was all about integrated software, but now things have moved to the cloud. It's a totally new way of delivering building blocks to the developers. What’s more, real time communications are embedded in more things than we’ve ever seen before. People simply want more. Seeing changes in the comms landscape is what inspired me to found iotcomms.io in 2018, with the purpose to broaden our communications involvement in the tech space.
What’s exciting about Telecoms right now?
At the end of the day, tech startups can't reinvent the wheel. In its simplest form, telecoms means to make a phone call and have it ring on the other side. This isn’t anything exciting or new - but it’s still a key component that must always work, be stable and reliable. That's why seamless integration is needed. For us, by working with Telness Tech we’ve built a platform that allows our customers to deliver a trustworhty service that works and that is reliable. Then our customers can innovate on top of that as they like.
Why is this a great time for iotcomms.io?
There are many different infrastructures out there that need to be modernised. Once those players realise that - they will need platforms like iotcomms.io to be there and help them to make it happen.
What is the connection between telecoms and CPaaS?
The way we communicate is rapidly changing. In the old days we had a fixed line, and we made a phone call. Today, communication is more broad - we use Slack, social media, video call and many different forms of it in addition to a phone call.
You have a partnership with Telness Tech. What can you tell us about this relationship and what stood out to you?
Telness Tech was an innovative force in the Swedish market. We had the initial meeting with them at a time when iotcomms.io was still relatively new. A year later Telness Tech came back to us and explained that they need to replace their old tech solution and build something more modern, so they asked if we could do it together and that’s how our story began.
We have been working with many different telecom companies and most of them are quite traditional. They are thorough but slow and there are the others who are more on the innovative side - Telness Tech belongs to the latter - they are easy to work with, pragmatic and focused. We do a lot of innovation together.
What do you think about Telness Tech’s “Telco Renaissance” ethos?
In the modern tech landscape it’s all about being quick and innovative whilst delivering value to the customer. So yes, the telco renaissance is possible and also necessary. A lot of the older players are stuck in the old process and it’s harder for them to change, so it’s definitely a place for newcomers to come in and disrupt that.
Furthermore, the telco space is a very competitive one right now, digital-first challengers are showing consumers a certain standard so if telco companies don’t innovate - it will be really hard for them to justify their price.
Why do you think customer service is so important to the end user?
Great customer service is crucial for customer retention. It’s all about the customer experience. Easy to use and frictionless service is key to being a good supplier.
Do you feel that solution providers are doing enough to innovate and move communications solutions to the digital age?
The key to ongoing innovation is to build services in a modern way from the start that is centred around being flexible, so you can always adapt them to the ever changing modern world. Companies need to deliver new features and new equipment all the time, and to be able to do that, they need to build the applications and softwares in a way that will allow them to deliver those quickly and seamlessly.
Sara Rasmussen, CCO of Telness Tech, comments: "We have been incredibly excited to start working together with iotcomms.io. Their platform is the reason that we can be 100% cloud-based. Together we brought our different innovation ideas to life. It’s an honour to work with Jörgen who shaped the cloud pbx space with Telepo as we know it."
